The History of M J Rifkin, Incorporated

Monte J. Rifkin

M J Rifkin, Incorporated began in 1989, the brainchild of president/CEO Monte J. Rifkin. The premise behind the company was that there was a definite need in the marketplace for a company that could do the supplemental marketing functions for businesses that didn't have a specialized marketing department. The result was a fully-functioning enterprise that serves in a support role to companies of all sizes. With the evolution of the e-mail industry, it seemed only natural that M J Rifkin, Incorporated should add this function to its complement of services. The company's early beginnings were the result of many years of successful sales, marketing, and creative writing.

Monte was born and raised in Skokie, Illinois, (Chicago area), and attended Evanston High School. He began as a features columnist while attending Illinois State University in the 1970's. He also served as business manager and general manager of his college radio station, and aided in writing the business plan for the first university-based commercial radio station. He worked on several major high-visibility methodology promotions, and was hired full-time upon completion of his mass communications degree curriculum at WLS (ABC-Chicago), where he worked in programming research, copywriting, promotions, and traffic (commercial logs) until moving to Michigan in 1980. From 1980 until 1985, Monte worked in various broadcast charges from sales rep to general manager to consultant, working at some of the country's most prestigious facilities. He was reviewed in one article as one of America's Top 50 Radio Broadcasting Executives.

After locating to Virginia Beach, Virginia to sign on an AM/FM combo, Monte returned to the publishing industry for the Commonwealth of Virginia Tourism campaign, "Virginia Is For Lovers," where he worked for the next ten years. During this tenure, Monte wrote the original screenplays for "TKO," "Checkpoint Freedom," "Another Man's Lover," and worked as author or in consultation on hundreds of writing projects, ranging from book liners and software testing, to screenplay formatting and novel adaptations. In 1989 he incorporated, and expanded into the sales incentives/advertising specialties market shortly thereafter. Having worked in broadcast, print, film, direct mail and electronic media, he was well-balanced to serve various associations within his industry.

As a member of the American Advertising Federation, Monte served as newsletter publisher, treasurer, and fundraising chair of his local board in Hampton Roads, Virginia. He was elected in 1995 to serve as governor of Virginia for the AAF, responsible for the advertising community and media throughout the state with regard to issues affecting that industry. Of particular note were issues affecting First Amendment Commercial Free Speech. He was the meeting planner and coordinator for the 3rd District American Advertising Federation annual conference, and served in the capacity of executive producer for the Mid-Atlantic American Advertising Awards show in 1996. He has worked in various production capacities for several local Addy Award presentations as well. He has been a guest speaker at numerous conference, meetings and conventions on the "Creative v. Business" topic, and received numerous awards for his motivational speaking, creative writing, and broadcast accomplishments.

In 1996, Monte moved back to the Chicago area. He has recently served on the Executive Board of the Skokie Chamber of Commerce and Industry, and the NorthShore American Cancer Society Steering committee where he serves as Entertainment Chairperson for the Relay for Life.
